Start with a survey, not a phone estimate

The customs border, and the Republic vs Northern Ireland difference

This is the part that catches most people out, and it is worth getting straight before you book anything.

The Republic of Ireland is in the EU, so household goods travelling from Great Britain cross a customs border. The Common Travel Area covers your right to live and work in Ireland. It does not cover your possessions. Irish Revenue operates a relief for people transferring their normal residence to Ireland, but whether it applies to you, and what paperwork it needs, is yours to confirm with Irish Revenue or a customs agent. Northern Ireland is a different job entirely. It is part of the UK, so a move to Belfast or Derry is a domestic removal with a sea crossing and none of the customs considerations that apply to the Republic. We move households there as standard.

The crossing is coordinated as part of the move plan, so it is not something you arrange separately.
